Some verbs need an object
  • Use a dictionary: 
    • “transitive” = needs an object
    • “with object” = needs an object
    • “intransitive” ≠ needs an object
    • “no object” ≠ needs an object

Some verbs have two objects

a direct object & an indirect object

“I gave the book to my friend.”

direct object = “the book”

indirect object = “my friend”

The indirect object is often part of a prepositional phrase, and it can come before or after the direct object.
